Executive summary

Most “best Magento B2B extensions” lists treat Magento as one platform. It isn’t. Adobe Commerce ships company accounts, shared catalogs, and negotiable quotes. Requisition lists and purchase orders too. All of it lands the moment you install the native B2B extension. Open Source merchants build that same list from scratch, one purchase at a time.

That gap explains most of the confusion in vendor content. Take tiered pricing. It gets sold as a paid add-on. It ships free in core Magento, on both editions. This post maps what’s native, what’s bolted on, and exactly where the line falls by edition.

Buy every extension on this list, on either edition, and one problem still remains. A buyer logged into your store still checks one tool for price, another for quote status, and a third for stock. No extension group fixes that. We’ll get to what does, at the end.

Introduction

Your ecommerce manager has six browser tabs open. Each tab is a different Magento B2B extension. A quoting tool, a search upgrade, a pricing plugin, a PIM connector, an ERP sync, and a punchout add-on. She doesn’t know which ones her store needs. Or which ones her Adobe Commerce license already covers.

That’s not a knowledge gap. It’s an edition gap. Adobe Commerce and Magento Open Source aren’t the same product with different price tags. They ship different native features. Most vendor content never says which edition it means.

The result cuts both ways. Adobe Commerce merchants buy extensions for problems they already solved. Open Source merchants skip extensions for problems core Magento never solved. Both mistakes cost real money.

This post sorts the market by edition. What’s native. What you have to buy. And what stays unsolved either way. Start with the map below.

Capability Native on Adobe Commerce (with B2B extension) Native on Magento Open Source What usually fills the gap
Company accounts, roles & hierarchy Native Not native Usually custom dev work. No clean extension group covers this fully.
Shared catalogs with company pricing Native Not native Catalog/PIM extension plus a pricing extension, combined and copied.
Negotiable quotes (RFQ workflow) Native Not native RFQ or quoting extension.
Requisition lists & quick order Native Not native Rarely replicated well. Usually skipped or custom-built.
Purchase orders & payment-on-account credit terms Native Not native Custom dev work, or credit control kept in the ERP and synced over.
Basic customer-group & quantity tier pricing Native (core Magento) Native (core Magento) N/A. Ships free on both editions. Extensions only add finer per-customer granularity.
Search with synonyms, facets, merchandising rules Native via Live Search (Adobe Commerce PaaS only) Not native. Base OpenSearch has no synonym or facet layer. Search or merchandising extension.
Punchout, procurement-portal, or ERP sync Not native Not native Dedicated punchout or ERP-connector extension, or custom integration.

One row deserves a second look before you shop anything. Basic customer-group and tier pricing is free on both editions. It’s the sharpest confusion in this market. Check it before you spend a dollar.

1. Search extensions

Comparison diagram showing Basic Search with limited keyword matching versus Smarter Search using synonyms, facets, and merchandising for better product discovery.
If you run Adobe Commerce on the cloud or on-premises tier, you probably already own the fix for weak search. Live Search adds synonyms, facets, and merchandising rules on the same OpenSearch foundation your store already runs. Buying a third-party search extension on top of that is usually wasted money.

Open Source merchants sit in a different spot. Base OpenSearch handles query matching and type-ahead. It has no built-in synonym or facet layer. Say a buyer searches “bolt”. Your catalog calls it “fastener”. The search fails. Here, a search extension fills a real gap.

Check whether you can use Live Search first. It needs Adobe Commerce 2.4.4 or later, with cron and indexers running. It is also PaaS-only. A Commerce license alone does not mean you have access. AI product search for B2B covers what a smarter search layer actually needs to work. How AI product search works breaks down the search mechanics underneath it.

2. RFQ and quoting extensions

This is the group Open Source merchants almost always need, and Adobe Commerce merchants almost never do. Once the B2B extension is installed, negotiable quotes ship out of the box. A buyer requests a price, you respond, they accept or counter, all inside the platform.

Open Source has no match built in. A merchant on Open Source who wants that same ask-reply-accept flow has to buy a separate RFQ or quoting extension to get there. There’s no native fallback to lean on.

Before you add one on Adobe Commerce, confirm the B2B module is actually installed and turned on first. Per Adobe’s B2B install docs, it’s a separate Composer package, not a checkbox in the base install. Some merchants pay for a quote extension they already own. RFQ automation covers what a working quote workflow should actually do, end to end.

3. Customer-group and tier-pricing extensions

Skip this one unless your current pricing isn’t fine-grained enough. Basic customer-group pricing and quantity tier pricing ship free in core Magento, on both editions. Neither one is part of the paid B2B module.

That surprises a lot of buyers. Most “must-have B2B extension” lists include a pricing tool, as if tiers don’t exist without one. They already exist. What they add is finer control. Think one price for one customer, not a whole group.

Don’t confuse this with company pricing. That one does need the B2B module. Company pricing gates a shared catalog to a specific business account, with its own approval chain. Group and tier pricing is older, simpler, and free on Open Source and Adobe Commerce alike.

4. Catalog and PIM data extensions

This one stops being optional once your catalog gets messy. Every tool that touches your catalog is only as good as the data feeding it. Search, quoting, an AI catalog assistant. All of them.

A PIM or catalog-data extension cleans up specs, attributes, and images before they hit Magento. That way, search results and quote line items match what’s actually on the shelf. Skip it if your catalog is small and clean. Budget for it above a few thousand SKUs. Same if your data still lives in spreadsheets.

Clean data also decides whether an AI catalog assistant answers right or guesses. If you’re evaluating that layer for Magento , ChatSKU’s Magento integration guide covers what a working setup actually requires.

5. ERP connector extensions

Diagram showing a B2B buyer querying ChatSKU, which pulls data from Search, Quotes, Pricing, and ERP systems to provide a single answer.
Budget for this one on either edition. It’s plumbing, not a nice-to-have. Neither edition ships a native ERP sync. Not for stock, not for pricing, not for orders. That covers SAP, NetSuite, Dynamics, and Epicor alike.

Almost every Magento B2B store of any size runs one. Custom-built or off the shelf. Without it, someone on your team checks stock counts by hand. They match order status across two systems that should already agree.

The quality of that sync matters as much as having one at all. A connector that exports incomplete or duplicate SKU data creates the same downstream problem a missing extension does. Checking your ERP export readiness is a fast way to catch that before it becomes a bigger fix later.

6. What still stays missing, no matter how many you buy

Buy every extension here, on either edition, and you still run three or four separate systems. Search, quotes, pricing, ERP sync. Each one answers its own narrow question. None of them hand your buyer one answer in one place.

A buyer in a shared catalog still checks one tool for price. Another for quote status. A third for stock. That’s not a missing extension. It’s a missing layer. One that sits above the whole stack. It answers using the catalog and pricing logic Magento already produces, native or extended.

That’s the gap ChatSKU closes. It isn’t installed inside Magento core. It isn’t a Marketplace product either. ChatSKU’s Magento B2B chatbot extension deploys as one line of script. The Magento 2 AI chatbot setup guide walks through every step. It reads what your store already knows, out of the box or through the extensions above. Then it answers the buyer directly, instead of routing them through four separate tools to get one answer.

People also ask

Do I need a Magento B2B extension if I'm already on Adobe Commerce?

Not for the features in the table above. Company accounts, shared catalogs, negotiable quotes, requisition lists, quick order, and purchase orders all ship out of the box once the B2B extension is installed. Confirm it’s actually installed and active before buying anything meant to replicate what you already have.

Is customer-group pricing part of the paid B2B module?

No. Basic customer-group and quantity tier pricing is core Magento features on both Adobe Commerce and Open Source. The B2B module’s pricing addition is company-level shared-catalog pricing, a separate and more complex layer tied to company accounts.

Can Magento Open Source support company accounts and shared catalogs?

Not out of the box. The B2B extension that provides company accounts, roles, hierarchies, and shared catalogs is available for Adobe Commerce only. Open Source merchants who need this usually approximate it with custom dev work, since no single extension group covers it cleanly.

What's the difference between Live Search and Magento's default search?

Default OpenSearch handles basic query matching and type-ahead. Live Search adds synonyms, facets, and merchandising rules on top of that same foundation. Live Search is Adobe Commerce PaaS-only and requires Commerce 2.4.4 or later.

Conclusion

Start with what you already own. If you’re on Adobe Commerce, confirm the B2B extension is installed before you shop for anything on this list. You may already have company accounts, quotes, and requisition lists live and simply unused.

If you’re on Open Source, budget for the categories that fill real gaps: RFQ, search, and ERP sync. Skip the pricing extensions unless your group and tier rules genuinely aren’t granular enough for how you sell.

Either way, the extension stack still won’t hand a buyer one answer in one place. See ChatSKU on Magento, which sits above whatever you’ve built, native or extended, and answers buyers directly using it. See what your catalog can already answer for yourself.

Frequently asked questions

You have to install something. The B2B extension, magento/extension-b2b, is a separate Composer package added after Adobe Commerce itself is set up. It isn’t active by default on a fresh install, on any Adobe Commerce edition.

Adobe Commerce ships native company accounts, shared catalogs, negotiable quotes, requisition lists, and purchase orders once the B2B extension is installed. That’s per Adobe’s overview of Commerce B2B. Open Source has none of those out of the box. Merchants build the match from third-party extensions or custom dev work instead.

Not for basic customer-group or quantity tier pricing. That’s core Magento features on both editions. You’d only need an extension for finer, per-customer pricing rules beyond what core tiers already offer.

Live Search adds synonyms, facets, and merchandising rules to Adobe Commerce’s base search. You need it if buyers search using terms your catalog doesn’t match exactly. It’s PaaS-only and requires Commerce 2.4.4 or later.

It’s a real, documented concern, not a theoretical one. Adobe runs a formal Extension Quality Program. Thousands of Marketplace extensions have to coexist without breaking each other’s code or your store’s core. No official source quantifies exactly how many is too many. The review process exists because the risk itself is real.

No. ChatSKU is not installed from the Marketplace, and it doesn’t sit inside Magento’s extension stack. It deploys as a single script tag and requires nothing inside Magento core, so it works alongside whatever extensions you already run.
